YOW Jazz, October 15: Kate Wyatt Trio and the Ottawa Jazz Orchestra
I interview Kate Wyatt about her upcoming performance at GigSpace on Friday and interview Adrian Cho about the 2024-25 season of the Ottawa Jazz Orchestra that starts on Thursday.
Kate Wyatt is a Montreal-based pianist and composer. We will hear some of my conversation with her about the trio, what to expect at their performance at GigSpace on Friday, and her influences. This trio is different than the quartet she recorded with on her 2022 release, Artifact. She describes her new project “Murmurations”:
Murmuration is the phenomenon of hundreds of thousands of birds flying in mesmerizing harmony, responding to one another on a seemingly telepathic level. Wyatt’s Murmurations project references that kind of effortless, magical, group chemistry: a sensibility that lies at the foundation of this trio. Kate Wyatt (piano), Adrian Vedady (bass) and Louis-Vincent Hamel (drums) connect on a deep musical level and display an amazing capacity for deep listening and group interplay, surprising and exciting their listeners with the continuous creation of spontaneous musical moments.

The Ottawa Jazz Orchestra embarks on its 20th year with its biggest season yet - 6 concerts. The first show, “Two and Two is Ten” is on Thursday at the National Arts Centre. I talk with the musical director (and bassist) Adrian Cho about the Orchestra’s history and the upcoming season.
From NOW until Nov. 29, 2024, CBC will be installing a new master FM antenna on the tower at Camp Fortune. These upgrades to the transmission infrastructure are necessary and long overdue. The work will unfortunately result in some signal strength reductions and service interruptions to all FM and television stations broadcasting from the site, including CKCU.
The CBC has been communicating with staff at CKCU and has assured us that precautions are being taken to limit the frequency and duration of interruptions to our signal. If there is a disruption to the FM signal, you can continue to listen to us online at ckcufm.com.
You can listen live in Ottawa at 93.1 FM or online at CKCUFM.com. The show will also be available for on demand streaming.
