YOW Jazz, November 26: Primary Colours plus new releases
The Ottawa trio Primary Colours will be playing at the National Arts Centre’s Fourth Stage on Thursday - I’ll feature a track from their 2023 release, All Love.
This week, the Ottawa-based trio, Primary Colours, will be playing at the National Arts Centre’s Fourth Stage. The trio is Deniz Lim-Sersan on keyboards, Chris Pond on bass and José Hernandez García on drums. They list their influences as Robert Glasper, GoGo Penguin, Tigran Hamasyan and Herbie Hancock: “blending acoustic and electric elements, the trio flows between head-nodding grooves and soulful melodies, discovering the unexpected through their improvisational virtuosity”. Opening for them will be the Cuban-Canadian pianist Miguel de Armas. Here’s a video of Primary Colours from earlier this year, filmed at Black Squirrel Books.
For the balance of the show I’ll feature a selection of new releases, including a track from the new release of Edmonton drummer and band leader, Joel Jeschke - Time & Place. On this album, he is joined by Holly Sangster on saxophone, Brett Hansen on guitar, Brendan McGrath on piano, and Aretha Tillotson on bass. As a bonus, Jeschke wins the prize for most arresting album cover of the month!
I’ll also play a track from the new Tom Harrell release, Alternate Summer. At 78 years old, he is still putting out dynamic releases. We will hear the title track, which features Mark Turner on tenor saxophone.
Also included in the show’s playlist is alto sax player Sarah Hanahan, from her debut release, Among Giants - she is one to watch. Here she is in a live performance of “A House is not a Home”.
You can listen live on CKCU-FM in Ottawa at 93.1 on the FM dial or through live streaming at CKCUFM.com at 11 a.m. on Tuesday. The show will also be available for on demand streaming shortly after broadcast.
