I’m excited to announce my new show on CKCU FM - YOW Jazz. (For non-Canadians, that’s the call sign for the Ottawa International Airport.) It will be airing every second Tuesday from 11 a.m. to noon, starting on April 2.
The show will feature new releases (defined as anything released within the past 9 months, or so), recent reissues, and musicians appearing in the listening region or within driving distance.
There is so much good new jazz being released, as well as some great rediscoveries through either reissues or recently discovered performances. And the way to truly experience great jazz is to hear it live.
The first show will be new releases of jazz ensembles, trios and vocals. The first track is from Ernesto Cervini’s Turboprop and their new album, A Canadian Songbook.
Ernesto Cervini’s Turboprop is:
Tara Davidson - Alto Saxophone
Joel Frahm - Tenor Saxophone
William Carn - Trombone
Adrean Farrugia - Piano
Dan Loomis - Bass
Ernesto Cervini - Drums
Some of the above artists (Tara Davidson, William Carn, Ernesto Cervini) will be performing in Ottawa at the National Arts Centre on April 19, as part of the Carn Davidson 9. I will be featuring some of their music and an interview with William Carn on my next show (April 16).
In this show I’m also playing a song from the new release by Triad. Triad is an interesting trio of trumpet, accordion, and marimba. I’m going to play the chilling track, “Stop This Train”, originally recorded by John Mayer. On this one, Shenel Johns, sings.
Here’s Shenel Johns singing, “You Go To My Head” in 2017:
Here’s the playlist for the show:
Ernesto Cervini's Turboprop - A Canadian Songbook - “Stuck Inside”
Justin Chart - Right On! - “Chart's Canvas (Live)”
Last Ark Out - Lift - “Song Needs Title”
Jocelyn Gould - Sonic Bouquet - “Spring Regardless”
Mamiko Watamabe - Being Guided By The Light - “Being Guided By The Light”
