YOW Jazz, August 20: Samuel Cousineau and Charlie Parker
Previewing the Samuel Cousineau Trio playing the music of Charlie Parker on August 30, plus new releases of tunes that Bird played
Charlie Parker’s birthday is August 29 and local saxophonist Samuel Cousineau will be celebrating that day in a performance with his trio at the Montgomery Scotch Lounge on August 30. I interviewed Cousineau about the show, his love of Bird, and the state of live jazz music in Ottawa.
Eventually, when Ottawa saxophonist Samuel Cousineau got to solo, the key snapped into focus — I think it was F major — and Cousineau, now at McGill, sounded great, with a huge, ripe sound, tons of confidence and lots of language and facility.

For the rest of the show, I will be showcasing new recordings of tunes that Charlie Parker played - in other words, jazz standards!
You can listen to the show live on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at 93.1 FM or online at CKCUFM.com. The show will also be available for on demand streaming shortly after broadcast.
