YOW Jazz, April 30: Roddy Ellias, Huu Bac, and Mary Ancheta Quartet; plus RSD finds
Upcoming performances in Ottawa and a selection from 2024 Record Store Day releases
The first part of the show will feature artists performing in Ottawa over the next two weeks, followed by selections from Record Store Day 2024 new releases.
Mary Ancheta Quartet
The Mary Ancheta Quartet will be playing at the National Arts Centre on May 10. Mary Ancheta is a Canadian Filipina born in Hamilton, Ontario, and now based in Vancouver. She has composed music for a variety of television shows, including Flight Attendant and Snow Piercer. Her quartet plays jazz with an electro-funk vibe. We will hear her new single, “Why Not”, followed by a track from the quartet’s 2023 release, Level Up. The quartet includes Mary Ancheta on keyboards, Dominic Conway on tenor saxophone, Matt Reid on bass, and Trent Otter on drums.
Huu Bac Quintet
On May 9, the Huu Bac Quintet will be playing at the National Arts Centre. Huu Bac was born in Vietnam and came to Canada with his family at the age of 2. He then discovered the beauty of the Vietnamese monochord, the Dan Bau. He also learned to play the Chinese fiddle, the Erhu. We will hear, “On the Steps of St-Paul’s”, the title track from the 2017 release of the quintet.
Roddy Ellias
Ottawa’s own, Roddy Elias, will be playing at the SAW Gallery on Thursday, May 9, for the official launch of his new album, Moon Over Lake. I will be playing a track from his new release, a solo guitar piece. At his concert he will be playing solos, duos and trios, with Felicity Williams (voice) and Petr Cancura (clarinet and mandolin), with music from his new release and also Postcard. Here’s a track from Postcard as a teaser.
Record Store Day releases
Record Store Day is an annual event designed to drive vinyl collectors to the record stores. It is also an occasion for the release of undiscovered music and this year is no exception. Fortunately, the music becomes available on CD and digitally shortly after Record Store Day.
On the show I will feature a lost album from Chet Baker and Jack Sheldon, recorded in 1972; Art Tatum playing in Chicago in 1953; Shelley Manne and his Men, recorded at the Monterey Jazz Festival in 1958; Cannonball Adderley recorded in concert in 1969 and 1972; and Yusef Lateef recorded in concert in 1972.
You can listen on Tuesday, April 30 either on the radio at 93.1 FM or online. Shortly after broadcast, the show is available for streaming on demand.
