YOW Jazz, April 29: Post-election all-Canadian edition
Featuring Shraddha Pai and the Prismaticks and a preview of the JazzWorks' 30th Anniversary concert of young musicians
As I am writing this, no one knows the outcome of the Canadian election - but, I think we might have universal agreement that it will be nice to have it over with… On this show, we will celebrate Canada with an all-Canadian lineup.
Shraddha Pai has a new EP out, “Into the Moonlight”, with her group The Prismaticks. The Prismaticks are Glenn Anderson on drums, Nathaniel Edgar on keyboard, and Gram Whitty on bass.
I talked to her about her journey from Bollywood music to jazz and also about the new release.
Here she is playing live with The Primaticks.
JazzWorks is an Ottawa-based not-for-profit organization dedicated to the development of jazz musicianship in players of all ages. This year is its 30th anniversary and this coming weekend is a celebration with a number of different events. On the show, I will be featuring some of the musicians playing on Saturday, May 3rd, in a show featuring 8 of the young musicians who have received JazzWorks scholarships. Go here for ticket information, and here for bios of all the performers.
On the show I will be featuring Nick MacLean, Claire Devlin, and Ross Morgan.
I interviewed Claire Devlin in December about growing up in Ottawa playing jazz. Also playing at the concert will be Samuel Cousineau on saxophone. I interviewed him in August of last year about Charlie Parker.
One of the central activities of JazzWorks is its annual jazz camp. In my interview on In A Mellow Tone last year with Charly Gordon, he talked about his experiences playing there over the years.
Ross Morgan will also be playing a duo concert with Tim Bedner on May 8 at GigSpace.
For the rest of the show I will play new releases from Canadian artists. You can listen live on Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the National Capital Region at 93.1 on the FM dial or through live streaming at CKCUFM.com. The show is also available for listening on demand.
