YOW Jazz, April 1: Melanie Scholtz on her musical journey & homage to Nancy Wilson
I interview South African jazz vocalist Melanie Scholtz about her musical journey, plus a few new releases
Melanie Scholtz was born and raised in Capetown, South Africa. On the show you will hear my conversation with her about her journey, as well as some of her earlier releases. We will also hear some of her new release of Nancy Wilson tunes, “Sweet Nancy”.
She moved to New York City in 2017 and performed with Wynton Marsalis and The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra in The Great South African Songbook Tour.
On the show, I will also be playing a new release from Aaron Rimbui, a Kenyan pianist. Here are Melanie Scholtz and Aaron Rimbui talking about and improvising the Miriam Makeba tune “Malaika”.
And here she is with Norwegian bassist Jo Skannsar, with “Yakhal’ Inkomo”.
You can listen to the show live on Tuesday, April 1 at 11 a.m. at 93.1 FM in the National Capital Region, or via live streaming at CKCUFM.com. The show is also available for on demand streaming.
