YOW Jazz and In A Mellow Tone, December 24 & 25: Seasonal music, new and old
To celebrate the holiday season I will be featuring new seasonal tracks on YOW Jazz and more classic seasonal jazz on In A Mellow Tone. Both will be available for on demand streaming on Monday
More people listen to jazz during December than anytime of the year because of all the jazz versions of the seasonal classics. On December 24, I will be broadcasting new releases on YOW Jazz and on December 25, I will be broadcasting classic seasonal recordings, plus a few seldom heard releases, on In A Mellow Tone.
On YOW Jazz, scheduled for broadcast on December 24, I will be playing all new releases, including some tracks from this new release from Laila Biali. I’ll also be playing some Kellylee Evans, Caity Gyorgy, Donald Vega, and others.
In the first hour of In A Mellow Tone, which will be broadcast on December 25, I have a set of music from Charlie Brown’s Christmas - some original and some interpretations. Ethan Iverson has recently written about the music.
The rest of In A Mellow Tone will be mostly older pieces, including a track featuring Mike Tremblay, an Ottawa saxophone player from a hard-to-find release, Comfort and Joy: Holiday Jazz in the Capital, by Tom Denison and Friends.
You can listen to YOW Jazz live on Tuesday at 11 a.m. on CKCU FM at 93.1 on the dial or online at CKCUFM.com. The show will also be available for on demand streaming on Monday.
