Rabble Without a Cause, September 11: Northern sounds - new releases from Finland and Canada
New experimental and improvisational music from Finland and Canada: Pauli Lyytinen, the Dun-Dun Band, Colin Fisher, and John Kameel Farah & Nick Fraser
On this week’s show we will hear new music from Pauli Lyytinen, the Dun-Dun Band, Colin Fisher, and John Kameel Farah & Nick Fraser.

Pauli Lyytinen is a Finnish saxophone player and in his new solo release he mixes field recordings of birds of Finland with tenor, soprano and alto saxophone, live effects, mellotron and percussion. Here’s a taste of his playing with the group Elifantree.
The Dun Dun Band from Toronto has a new album, Pita Parker, Pt. 1. This ten-piece band is led by Craig Dunsmuir. On their Bandcamp page the music is described this way:
The group's singular sound includes elements of jazz, experimental rock genres, American minimalism, and African traditions as they blend infectious odd-meter grooves with spontaneous arrangements (conducted by Dunsmuir) that spark improvisational conversations.
Here’s a sample of their live performance from an album released in 2022.
Colin Fisher is a member of the Dun-Dun Band and also has a new release - Suns of the Heart that he recorded in collaboration with David Psutka. The concept for the album was to “deconstruct Fisher's live process and apply a studio sampling methodology from hip hop to establish foundational layers for each track”.
Conceptually this is a reflection of Fisher's live process, where he samples and loops sounds in transparent ways and orchestrate textures, sounds, chord changes into fully realized compositions in real time. The freedom in the studio scenario enables complete separation of each sound and texture for mixing, orchestration and composition. The result is a compelling augmentation of his live process with the addition of Psutka's skill and conceptual sense for an entire new synthesis of ideas to something not previously possible or imaginable.
Nick Fraser on drums and John Kaleem Farah on piano will round out the show with selections from their new release, Farahser. Nick Fraser will be playing with Ethan Iverson on September 24 at the Mackay United Church in Ottawa - a presentation of the Ottawa Jazz Festival. Farah did the artwork for the album and is an accomplished artist - here’s another of his drawings.
You can listen to the show live in Ottawa on Wednesday at 11 p.m. on the radio at 93.1 FM or online at CKCUFM.com. The show will also be available for on demand streaming.
