Rabble Without A Cause, October 2: Intercontinental Collaborations
Music from groups made up of members from different continents - spanning the globe. Featuring Okse, Open Thread, Karoline Leblanc, and Jeff Henderson with Misha Marks and Gustavo Nandayapa
On this show I will be featuring collaborations of musicians from different continents - Europeans and Americans, Canadians and Australians, a Canadian and Europeans, and a New Zealander with Mexicans.
ØKSE
ØKSE is a core band of American drummer Savannah Harris, Danish saxophonist Mette Rasmussen, Haitian electronic musician Val Jeanty, and Swede Petter Eldh on bass, synths and sampler. On their self-titled release they are joined by four rappers: ELUCID and billy woods (aka Armand Hammer), and fellow Brooklynites Maassai, and Cavalier.
ØKSE means AXE in Danish. The band describes the meaning on their Bandcamp page:
The Axe has a lot of connotations, being one of humankind's oldest tools. Axe is also Ashe; the life-force that runs through all things, living and inanimate. Ashe is a current or flow, a groove that initiates can channel so that it carries them along their road in life.
Open Thread
Open Thread is a new ensemble based in Melbourne, Australia that includes Canadian cellist Peggy Lee, saxophonist Julien Wilson, guitarist Theo Carbo, and Canadian drummer Dylan van der Schyff. The ensemble came together after Peggy Lee’s recent relocation to Melbourne.
We will hear a few tracks from their self-titled release, including “4PM”, dedicated to the late Paul Motian, which the ensemble says “showcases their ability to honor musical legends while pushing boundaries”.
Gustavo Nandayapa, Misha Marks & Jeff Henderson
In November 2023, Gustavo Nandayapa and Misha Marks from Mexico joined New Zealand-based Jeff Henderson in live performances and Campechanos is the first volume of their collaboration.
Jeff Henderson is on alto saxophone, duck caller and vocals; Misha Marks is on guitar and tuba; and Gustavo Nandayapa is on drums.
Karoline Leblanc
Karoline Leblanc is a Canadian now living in Portugal. On the show I will play some music from her 2019 release, Double on the Brim.
This album was recorded in Lisbon with the following musicians:
Karoline Leblanc -piano
Yedo Gibson - soprano, alto & tenor saxophones
Luís Vicente - trumpet
Miguel Mira - cello
Paulo J Ferreira Lopes - drums
