Rabble Without A Cause, November 6: Funding Drive show #2 - New releases
I'm in the studio with Heavy Ben, spinning new releases, including an amazing Andrew Hill reissue, plus Anna Webber's new release
This is the last show of the 2024 Funding Drive. We have had a few donations from loyal listeners, but are still fairly far from our fundraising goal. If you love free jazz and stretching the boundaries, please consider a donation to show your support for programming not available anywhere else on the radio dial.
In my sets for the show I will be featuring all new releases (plus a new reissue). I will be starting with Canadian saxophonist, flutist, and composer, Anna Webber. Her new release with percussionist John Hollenbeck (now based in Montreal), and Matt Mitchell on piano, comes a decade after the release of the trio’s debut Simple. The music on this release has been described as being “at the intersection of avant-garde jazz and new classical music”.
The Andrew Hill Sextet Plus Ten released a live album in 2002 - A Beautiful Day. That album has been remastered with an extended edit of one track and a previously unreleased bonus track. The bonus track is too long for a funding drive show — but I will commit to playing it on a future show! We will hear a remastered “New Pinocchio”.
My last set will end with Canadian bassist, Dan Fortin, from his new release, Cannon. On the track we will hear, “Question Song”, he plays with Madeleine Ertel, a B.C.-born, now Toronto-based, trumpet player and composer. Here she is in a basement performance.
You can listen live at 11 p.m. on Wednesday in Ottawa at 93.1 on the FM dial or online at CKCUFM.com. The show will be available for on demand streaming shortly after broadcast.
Note: the FM antenna at Camp Fortune is being repaired which may result in an interruption in radio transmission - online streaming will continue as normal.
