Rabble Without A Cause, November 27: Canadian avant garde - old and new
In this show I feature a recording by John Geggie, Marilyn Crispell and Nic Fraser from November 2006, plus new releases
Eighteen years ago this month, Ottawa-based bassist John Geggie recorded at the Library and Archives building on Wellington Street in Ottawa with American pianist Marilyn Crispell and Toronto-based drummer Nick Fraser. We will hear a few tracks from the resulting album, Geggie Project.
The balance of the show will be newer releases from Canadian artists.
In an interview I did with Montreal-based pianist Kate Wyatt for YOW Jazz, she raved about Eric Hove, an alto saxophone player also based in Montreal. That is how I discovered his 2023 solo release, Solo. We will hear a few tracks from this release.
We will also listen to a few tracks from the new release from Peggy Lee (cello) and Cole Schmidt (guitar), Forever Stories Of: Moving Parties. Cole Schmidt has described the recording:
The initial idea came together as a way of expanding on a book of music we had started working on, to include others' improvising voices. It's about welcoming change, blame, mercy, and the agency to try things differently.
We will end the show with tracks from the new release of Simon Angell and Tommy Crane, Angell & Crane. They described their recording process:
We spent six days improvising in studio, joined by a pair of guests — alto saxophonist Charlotte Greve and singer Sarah Rossy. After amassing whole days worth of material, painstakingly recorded with as many microphones and inputs as possible to retain as much three dimensional depth and as many mixing options as possible, the next phase was distilling 40 hours of sound into just 40 minutes.
And this is the result.
Here’s a track that I will not be playing from that release.
You can listen live in Ottawa at 93.1 on the FM dial, or through online streaming at CKCUFM.com. The show will also be available for on demand streaming.
