Rabble Without A Cause, November 13: live music from Andrew Hill, Arthur Blythe & Wayne Shorter
New releases of live performances from 1976, 2002 and 2014

In this post-funding drive show I play some longer live tracks, all recently released.
Andrew Hill recorded a live performance that was recorded and released in 2002 under the title A Beautiful Day. A new remastered release, Beautiful Day, Revisited also includes a different version of the title track. We’ll hear that version - “Beautiful Day (Thursday)”.
Arthur Blythe was an American alto saxophonist who straddled the avant garde and mainstream jazz worlds. He played with Chico Hamilton, Gil Evans, Lester Bowie and Jack DeJohnette, among others. In 1976, a performance at Rivbea Studio, a loft apartment in New York City, was recorded and has only recently seen the light of day. Blythe played with Juini Booth (bass), Muhammad Abdullah (conga), and Steve Reid (drums). We will hear a medley of unidentified tunes.
Here’s another track from this performance.
Wayne Shorter was preparing archival recordings for eventual release before he died in 2023. The first result of this project, Celebrations, vol. 1, has just been released. The album is a 2014 recording of Shorter and his quartet, including pianist Danilo Perez, bassist John Patitucci, and drummer Brian Blade, live at the Stockholm Jazz Festival in Sweden. We will hear two tracks from this album.
You can listen live at 93.1 on the FM dial or at CKCUFM.com on Wednesday at 9 p.m. The show will also be available for on demand streaming.
