Rabble Without A Cause, May 21: Soundtrack for an Unmade Film - new releases
To celebrate the Cannes Film Festival - new releases that sound like they could have been made for film - but weren’t
The Festival at Cannes is underway and what better way celebrate than to listen to recent jazz releases that could have been in a movie? The show will be an eclectic mix of new releases that have a “soundtrack” vibe.
The show will kick off with a track from the new release from Alabaster DePlume, “A Blade Because a Blade Is Whole”. Here’s another track from the album.
Daniel Carter and Ayumi Ishito have released their first duo “Endless Season”. Daniel Carter is on trumpet, saxophones, clarinet, flute and piano while Ayumi Ishito is on tenor sax, effects, and synthesizer. We will hear “Teeyah” from that album. Here’s another tune from the album that might be good for a sci-fi Western.
I will also be playing some music from the debut of the Scandinavian trio, Bloomers. The trio is:
Anne ‘Efternøler’ Andersson - trumpet
Maria Dybbroe - clarinet & alto saxophone
Carolyn Goodwin – clarinet & bass clarinet
The trio is named for Amelia Bloomer, the owner of the world's first newspaper for women, The Lily: A Ladies Journal Devoted to Temperance and Literature, first published in 1849. She was also known for fashion reform - and her name is associated with pantaloons that became known as “bloomers”.
Each track of the album is dedicated to an important historical event in the struggle for women's freedom. We will hear a track dedicated to Masha Amini, who died in police custody in Tehran in 2022 after wearing her headscarf "incorrectly" in public.
We will also hear the amazing new release from the new group, Cosmic Ear - TRACES. Cosmic Ear is led by Christer Bothén, a collaborator with Don Cherry during his Swedish period in the 1970s. He is joined by Mats Gustafsson, Goran Kajfeš, Kansan Zetterberg and Juan Romero. The album tracks down the "traces" of Don Cherry's legacy - while adding their own distinctive stamp.
Christer Bothén is a multi-instrumentalist with a long history of continuous learning about music and musical instruments: “You need to be continually learning. Yet the important thing is what you do with what you learnt”. Here is a mini-documentary about his musical background plus some clips of performances.
I will be playing a lot of other new releases - and you can listen live at 93.1 on the FM dial in the National Capital Region or through live streaming at CKCUFM.com, on Wednesday, May 21 at 11 p.m. The show is also available for on demand streaming.
