Rabble Without A Cause, March 27: the junction of classical contemporary and jazz
Luminessence by Keith Jarrett with Jan Garbarek was recorded 50 years ago: we listen to a new reissue and some new releases
Keith Jarrett, like many pianists, had a passion for classical music. In 1974, he composed the music for Luminessence, an album featuring Jan Garbarek with members of the Stuttgart Symphony. ECM is reissuing some of its deep back catalogue in audiophile level vinyl in a series they're calling Luminessence. There are some interesting titles in this series, and I imagine I’ll be featuring more albums on future shows.
The March 27 show will start with two tracks from Luminessence (the album) - Windsong and the title track.
The balance of the show will be new releases that incorporate contemporary classical with improvisation.
The trio of Fie Schouten (bass clarinet, clarinet in A, basset horn), Vincent Courtois (violoncello), and Guus Janssen (piano, organ, harmonium, harpsichord) released an album late last year called VOSTOK: Remote Islands. The music is improvised and inspired by Judith Schalansky’s book "Atlas of Remote Islands: 50 islands I never set foot in and never will."
I enjoyed reading this book a few years ago and recommend it. However, it is a book about isolation and as Schalansky writes at the beginning, “Paradise is an island. So is hell.”
And, like you, I had no clue what a basset horn looked like:
On the show I also feature Quinsin Nachoff from his new album Star and Constellations. The track to be played is “Pendulum” and includes both the Bergamont Quartet and the quartet Rhythm Method. Both quartets are all-female.
Before the final track you will hear a short track from the trio Space from their new album Embrace the Space. Space is Lisa Ullén on piano, Elsa Bergman on double bass and Anna Lund on drums.
The show will end with a track from Richard Nelson’s new release with the Makrokosmos Orchestra, a mostly brass and woodwinds ensemble, with Richard Nelson on guitar. The album is called “Dissolve” and we will be hearing the track “Float”.
