Rabble Without A Cause, July 10: New and newer releases
I was sorting through all of my new releases and came up with a diverse playlist of Canadian and international artists
Sometimes the amount of new music being issued becomes overwhelming. I was doing a kind of “spring cleaning” of my hard drive and found a few treasures to share — admittedly an eclectic mix. The last two tracks on the show are from late 2023 - but all the other tracks are from 2024.
Sunny Five
Sunny Five is made up of five New York jazz musicians: Tim Berne, David Torn, Marc Ducret, Devin Hoff and Ches Smith. Tim Berne, on alto sax, played at the Ottawa Jazz Festival in June. We will hear a track from their 2024 release, “Candid”.
Rob Clutton Trio
We will hear a track from the 2024 release of this Toronto-based trio, “Asterballoo 22” - recorded in Berlin and Amsterdam.
Here’s a live performance from the Guelph Jazz Festival.
NOUT
This all-female trio from France is: Delphine Joussein on flute, Rafaelle Rinaudo on electric harp, and Blanche Lafuente on drums. We will hear a track from their new release, “LIVE ALBUM”. Here’s a sample of their live performance.
Nick Dunston
We will hear a track from the new Nick Dunston release, featuring the JACK Quartet:
Christopher Otto and Austin Wulliman - violins
John Richards - viol
Jay Campbell - cello)
Country Phasers
Pedal steel guitar is not usually associated with improvisational or experimental music and this music is hard to describe. American pedal steel player, Susan Alcorn, has made an effort to describe it:
As a musician, Kurt Newman's guitar and pedal steel guitar travels in directions where few dare to tread. This is wonderfully evidenced by his trailblazing album Cagey Doves which mixes noir Americana, Canadian folk, hints of circus music, and nods to minimalism in a way that is pleasing to the ear, the heart, and the analytical mind. I highly recommend this album.
This video of an earlier release is mesmerizing for those of us who watch cooking shows.
Eve Egoyan and Mauricio Pauly
Eve Egoyan is from Toronto and Mauricio Pauly is from Vancouver. We will hear a track from their 2023 release, “Hopeful Monster”. This is Eve Egoyan’s first improvisational album. Here’s a video of another track on the album.
Ensemble SuperMusique (ESM)
We will end the show with a 2023 recording by ESM. ESM features key performer-composers from Montreal’s long-standing and renowned scene of musique actuelle, contemporary music-making that synthesizes composition and improvisation as well as acoustic and electronic instrumentation. Founded in 1998, the ESM is currently directed by Joane Hétu and Danielle Palardy Roger, and comprises varied personnel depending on the project. We are going to hear a piece from their December 2023 release, “Démantibulé·es”, composed by Maxime Corbeil-Perron.
You can listen live on 93.1 FM in Ottawa or online at 11 p.m. on Wednesday, July 10. The show will also be available for on demand streaming.
