Rabble Without A Cause, January 8: a look back at 2024, part 2
In this second show of 2025, I feature three longer pieces from 2024 - The Sentient Beings, Goran Kajfes Tropique and James Ilgenfritz
Last week I featured unplayed gems from 2024 - this week I continue with longer pieces from 2024.
The Swedish quartet Goran Kajfeš Tropiques released “Tell Us” in May 2024. The album is three long pieces that are described on their Bandcamp page as “slow music to the bone, a deep body of work utilising the language of jazz as its core mode of communication but echoing way beyond”. We will hear “Magmatique”.
The Tropiques quartet is made up of Goran Kajfeš (trumpet, synthesizer), Alexander Zethson (piano, organ, synthesizer), Johan Berthling (acoustic bass) and Johan Holmegard (drums).
James Ilgenfritz is an American bassist. His release, also from May, is a collection of performances made between 2018 and 2023. We will listen to “Subject-Abject-Object” recorded in 2021 with Hypercube. Hypercube is Erin Rogers, saxophones; Jay Sorce, electric guitar; Andrea Lodge, piano/accordion; and Chris Graham, percussion.
The last half of the show will be The Sentient Beings from their album “Truth Is Not The Enemy”, released in August 2024. We will listen to “Hills and Valleys” recorded on the last night of their February 2024 tour. The Sentient Beings are:
John O’Gallagher - alto sax
Faith Brackenbury – violin / viola
John Pope - bass
Tony Bianco - drums
Tony Bianco is quoted on their Bandcamp page on the purpose behind the performance:
The purpose was the Truth of playing, bringing us out of the confusion of this world. Truth is. It’s in front of us all the time. That’s where the music comes from. We all go through the ups and downs of life. Hills and Valleys, but Truth is not the enemy.
You can listen on January 8 at 11 p.m. live at 93.1 on the FM dial in the Ottawa region, or online at CKCUFM.com. The show is also available for on demand streaming.
I am taking a two-week break from Rabble Without A Cause - your host will be Heavy Ben. I’ll be back on January 29th.
