Rabble Without A Cause, August 28: Paul Dunmall, Tony Levin and Elton Dean
Featuring some British Free Jazz legends
We will start the show with selections from a new release featuring Paul Dunmall, Paul Rogers and Tony Levin, recorded in November 2009. Paul Dunmall is on tenor and soprano saxaphones, bass clarinet and Bb clarinet; Paul Rogers is on acoustic bass; and Tony Levin is on drums.
Tony Levin died in 2011 at the age of 71. He played with Dunmall, Rogers, and Keith Tippett in the legendary quartet Mujician.
We will also hear Elton Dean’s Ultimate Saxophone Company in a reissue of a 1990 recording with some unreleased bonus material. The Unlimited Saxophone Company was a short-lived band. As far as is known, there were only three gigs: 7th May 1989 at the Community Centre, London (London Jazz Saxophone Festival); 5th April 1991 at the Vortex, London and the May edition of the Europa Jazz Festival, Le Mans 1991. The first was recorded and is the reissued album we will hear selections from. The last was filmed by Phillipe Renaud - the music from the film has been mastered and is offered as a download through purchase of the CD only. We will hear a track from that download.
The Ultimate Saxophone Company was:
Elton Dean - alto sax, saxello
Paul Dunmall - tenor & baritone saxes
Trevor Watts - alto sax
Simon Pickard - tenor sax
Paul Rogers - double bass
Tony Levin - drums
You can listen to the show live on Wednesday at 11 p.m. at 93.1 FM or online at CKCUFM.com. The show will also be available for streaming on demand.
