Rabble Without A Cause, August 21: Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre in 1975
A live recording from July 1975 has just been released, and we will listen to a re-release of a live recording from 1979
We will hear a new release of a performance by Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre at Sam & Bea Rivers' loft - an important hangout for avant garde musicians in the 1970s. This is volume 1 of loft recordings from the summer of 1975 - it will be interesting to see what future volumes bring to light.
During the 1970s, Sam Rivers (also a musician) and his wife, Beatrice, ran a jazz loft called "Studio Rivbea" in New York City's NoHo district. It was the most famous of the lofts in NYC. The loft was an important development in free jazz, as the musicians were in charge, free of the business aspects of bars and concert venues. There were a number of compilation releases of performances at the Studio Rivbea, released under the title Wildflowers on the Douglas label.
There are three unidentified tracks on this live recording at the Rivbea Studio from July 12, 1975. The musicians on this release are:
Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre - tenor saxophone, clarinet
Malachi Thompson - trumpet
Milton Suggs - electric bass
Alvin Fielder - drums
To round out the show we will hear some of a performance from 1979, recently reissued on Black Saint Records. McIntyre plays tenor, flute, clarinet, bass clarinet and percussion, with Longineu Parson on trumpet, flugelhorn, flute, sopranino and recorders, Leonard Jones on bass, King Mock on drums.
In his later years, McIntyre fell on hard times and was busking in the NYC subway system. This brief documentary tells his story. And here’s some amateur footage of a performance by the subway cars at Grand Central Station, from sometime in 2011.
You can listen live on Wednesday at 11 p.m. on either 93.1 on the FM dial or at CKCUFM.com. The show will also be available for on demand streaming.
