Rabble Without A Cause, August 14: New releases featuring Sabu Toyozumi
Yoshisaburo "Sabu" Toyozumi is part of the first generation of free jazz players in Japan - we will listen to new releases featuring his drumming
On this show we will hear new releases from Yoshisaburo "Sabu" Toyozumi, now 81 years old, in live performances from 1987, 2016 and 2017. Toyozumi became the only non-American Japanese member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) in 1971.
On this show we will first hear him playing with the guitarist Derek Bailey. This performance was recorded in 1987, but only released in May of this year. Bailey died in 2005.
We will also hear a new release of a performance from 2016, with Peter Brötzmann on tenor saxophone and Toshinori Kondo on trumpet. On both of these new releases the album cover art is by Toyozumi.
The show will end with recordings from Toyazumi’s tour of New Zealand in 2017. These performances featured Daniel Beban on electric guitar, Tom Callwood on double bass and Jeff Henderson on saxophones. Volume 1 was released in 2023, and volume 2 was released in January of this year.
You can listen live on Wednesday, August 14 at 11 p.m. on 93.1 FM in the Ottawa region or online at CKCUFM.com. The show will also be available for on demand streaming.
