Rabble Without a Cause, April 9: Joachim Kühn and Abdou/Warelis/Gouband
A new solo release from Joachim Kuhn and one from Sakina Abdou, Marta Warelis and Toma Gouband
Joachim Kühn is a German pianist who recently celebrated his 81st birthday. In 2023, he recorded the music on his new release, “Échappée”. Bert Noglik writes in the liner notes:
This is a summation under the banner of the provisional; these melodies condensed into moments reflect the experiences of a rich life. With this recording, made shortly before his eightieth birthday, the pianist set out to offer the best he was capable of: Joachim Kühn, that exceptional talent, setting his bar higher than ever.
On the show we will listen to three tracks from this new release, including a tribute to his brother Rolf, a clarinet player, who died in 2022 at the age of 92.
Here is Joachim Kühn with a trio playing live in 2016.
On the show I will also be featuring the November 2024 release “Hammer, Roll and Leaf” from the trio of Sakina Abdou (alto and tenor sax), Marta Warelis (piano), and Toma Gouband (drums).
Sakina Abdou follows up her first solo album with this trio release - the result of an improvised, closed session of several days in her home, punctuated by two concerts. Toma Gouband has played with Evan Parker and Marta Warelis has played with Dave Douglas and Andy Moor.
You can listen to the show live on Wednesday, April 9 at 11 p.m. at 93.1 on the FM dial in the National Capital Region or live stream at CKCUFM.com. The show will also be available on demand after broadcast.
