Rabble Without A Cause, April 23: new releases featuring the trumpet
New releases from Vijay Iyer and Wadada Leo Smith, Devin Gray with Ralph Alessi and Whispering Worlds, featuring Aaron Shragge
On this week’s show we will hear three new releases featuring the trumpet. Wadada Leo Smith (trumpet) is a veteran of the music scene - 83 years old and still playing. Vijay Iyer (piano) is 30 years younger. We will listen to tracks from their second outing as a duo - Defiant Life.
Devin Gray released the second album in his series, Melt all the Guns, in October of last year. On this album he plays with Ralph Alessi on trumpet and Myslaure Augustin on piano. Ralph Alessi also played on the first release, Melt All the Guns. We will hear a few tracks from the most recent release.
Canadian trumpet player Aaron Shragge, now based in New York City, has a new release with the band he leads, Whispering Worlds. On Cosmic Cliffs he is joined by Luke Schwartz on guitar and electronics; Damon Banks on bass; and Deric Dickens on drums. The album is a tribute to Jon Hassel. We will hear two tracks from this release.
