Rabble Without A Cause, April 10 - Space and Time and Dreaming Music: introspective improvisation
The music of Marianne Trudel, Catherine Sikora and Susan Alcorn, Sylvie Courvoisier, and Florian Arbenz
Space, horizon
Slowness, softness
Breathing, whisper
Sound, silence
Sheltered, outside the world
For a moment
Espace, horizon
Lenteur, douceur
Respiration, murmure
Son, silence
Enveloppés, à l’abri, en dehors du monde
Pour un instant- Marianne Trudel
On this show I’ll be featuring some quiet, improvisational music. The show will start with the latest solo album from Marianne Trudel, a pianist and composer, based in Montreal. The album, “À pas de loup, Quiet sounds for a loud world” was released in October of last year. Marianne Trudel plays harmonium and piano on the track, De temps et d’espace.
In this show I’ll also be featuring the novel pairing of saxophone and pedal steel guitar from Catherine Sikora and Susan Alcorn’s new release, Filament.
In the middle of the show you will hear a lengthy track from Sylvie Courvoisier’s album, Chimaera, released in October of last year.
The music on this album was initially commissioned by the Sons d’hiver festival in Paris. In composing this music, Sylvie Courvoisier was inspired by the Symbolist paintings of Odilon Redon (1840-1916), a French artist whose fantastical, hallucinatory work aimed to place “the logic of the visible at the service of the invisible.” Redon was a precursor of the Surrealists and he likened his pictures to music, in that they evoked “the ambiguous realm of the undetermined.” Here’s one of his paintings, entitled “Apparition”.
The full live performance is available online and worth watching:
We will then hear a short interlude of more Marianne Trudel - this from her album “La joie de l'éphémère”, with Rémi-Jean Leblanc on bass and John Hollenbeck on drums. This trio will be performing at the Ottawa Jazz Festival on June 28. Marianne Trudel likes to describe her music in poetry and this is how she describes this album:
“A butterfly passing by, a moon rising, a breeze rising.
A breaking wave, a sudden storm, the smell of pine.
A shooting star…Make a wish! Shadow and light, the joy of the ephemeral.”
On this show I will also be featuring a recent release from Florian Arbenz — Conversations #11 and #12. I will be playing two tracks: Dreaming Music and Winter Still. The musicians on the album are:
Yumi Ito: voice
Percy Pursglove: trumpet , flugelhorn
Ivo Neame: fender rhodes , synths
Szymon Mika: guitar
Jim Hart: vibraphon, marimbaphon, glockenspiel, percussion
Florian Arbenz: drums, percussion
Here’s a track from the album (that I will not be playing), followed by a different version of the same title in Conversation #10, released in 2023.
The show will end with a short track from Marianne Trudel — Quiet sounds for a loud world.
